Op. 96 was Ludwig Van Beethoven’s last violin sonata. The original score has unusual characteristics, both in format but, above all, in appearance (356 x 244 mm compared to the typical 230 x 320 mm). By collating the watermark with that of Op. 97, its very particular origin can immediately be identified. Not attributable to any paper mill in the Empire, as was the case for many Hapsburg composers, but to an Italian one, inscribed in the initials PM – Pietro Miliani, of the Fabriano Miliani paper mills – which were the initials on the watermark for the score.
